Gian Maria Morlaiter
St. Paul

1743
Church of Our Lady of the Rosary ("The Gesuati"), Venice, Italy

Morlaiter garbs and poses Paul as a classical orator. The sword refers to his beheading and the book to his writings. It is traditional to show Paul balding from the front, although in most images the hair loss has not extended this far. An aspect of the tradition that the artist ignores completely is the pointy beard.
